“Lepak Edges Bennett to Win Pepsi Challenge 75"
By Dan Margetta
|
(Slinger,
WI); June 1, 2008 - Jeremy
Lepak outdueled Lowell Bennett in a classic short track last lap
battle to win the Pepsi Challenge 75-lap late model feature by less
than a car length Sunday night at the Slinger Super Speedway.
“That was some awesome racing,” Lepak told the crowd from Victory
Lane, “We touched a little bit on that last lap but that’s just fun
short track racing. Congratulations to Lowell (Bennett) on a good
run as well.”
Bennett, who took the lead on lap 18 from Mike Strupp, paced the
race for much of the event while Lepak clawed his way forward from
his tenth starting position. Utilizing the outside groove early on,
Lepak worked his way into the top five by lap 30 and twenty laps
later, raced his way by Strupp for second while Bennett enjoyed a
sizeable lead. Again using the outside, Lepak began to cut into
Bennett’s advantage as the leader began to work lapped traffic and
with fifteen laps to go, Lepak found himself nearly on Bennett’s
bumper. Bennett’s car appeared to begin to swing loose off the
corners in the closing laps, which allowed Lepak to narrow the gap
even more. As Bennett began to protect the outside line, Lepak began
to work the bottom as the laps continued to click away. With two
laps to go, Lepak was glued to Bennett’s rear bumper and as they
took the white flag, Lepak nudged Bennett heading into turn one,
sending him high enough on the racetrack to pull alongside as they
exited turn two. After running side by side down the backstretch,
Bennett shut the door entering turn three to keep the lead, but in
doing so, drifted wide exiting turn four, allowing Lepak to get a
run on the inside in the sprint to the checkered flag. Lepak was
able to edge Bennett at the finish line by less than a car length
for the victory.
Mike Strupp led in the early going and kept the leaders in sight to
finish third while David Prunty charged his way from the eleventh
starting position to finish in fourth place. Tommy Pecaro also raced
his way forward to finish a strong fifth. Al Schill finished in the
sixth spot followed by Collin Bamke and Mike Meyerhofer who led the
opening thirteen laps. Dennis Prunty and Dan Jung rounded out the
top ten finishers.
Mike Egan took the checkered flag first in the 25-lap late model
semi-feature, beating Josh Wallace to the line. Fred Winn finished
third followed by Jerry Eckhardt and Pete Wiedmeyer. Conrad Morgan
celebrated his birthday with a win in the last model fast dash while
Jeremy Lepak was the fastest qualifier at 11.500 seconds.
Jon Ovadal Jr. took top honors in the 30-lap limited late model for
his first feature win of the season.
Jerry Eckhardt and Ovadal led the field to the green flag with
Eckhardt grabbing the early lead over Ovadal, Brad Keith, and Rob
Braun. Eckhardt maintained the lead until the caution flag appeared
on lap six for a spin in turn two by Corey Funk. During the caution
laps, Eckhardt left the speedway with some sort of mechanical
problem, handing the lead over to Ovadal. Ovadal chose the inside
line for the restart with Keith lining up on the outside ahead of
Braun, Steve Apel, Trevor Dassow, and Dave McCardle. As racing
resumed, Ovadal quickly jumped out to a sizeable lead while Braun
used the inside groove to take over second place from Keith. Farther
back, Chris Ratajczyk and Jon Reynolds Jr. began to slice their way
forward, tracking down the leaders just past the halfway point.
Ovadal hit his marks over the final laps and was never headed,
charging to the win by just under a straightaway over Braun.
Reynolds continued his march forward to finish in third while
McCardle took the fourth spot just ahead of Ratajczyk.
Jack Rabey notched his first win of the season in the limited late
model fast dash while Jon Reynolds Jr. appeared to shatter the track
record in qualifying before his time was disallowed when he failed
technical inspection after qualifying.
Mike Borchardt Jr. held off numerous challenges en route to his
first feature victory of the season in the 30-lap Midwest Sportsman
main event.
Andy Haver and Scott Shambeau brought the field to the green flag
and Holtz jumped into the lead from the third spot when Haver
experienced a mechanical problem in turn one which carried Shambeau
up the racetrack and scattered the field behind them as the race
remained under green. Borchardt made his way through the first lap
dust up to pull into second place while Thomas also avoided the
trouble and moved into third place by lap nine as the first caution
flag appeared for a spin by Shawn Hoeffler in turn one. Holtz chose
the inside lane for the restart and Borchardt used the outside
position to race hard for the lead, taking the top spot on lap 11
while Thomas and Graczkowski began to advance their way forward.
Borchardt’s car swung loose off the corners in the later laps, but
each time he maintained the lead even after turning nearly
completely sideways off turn four at one point. With Borchardt
holding onto the lead, Holtz and Thomas battled hard with
Graczkowski, Bobby Giers and Jay Shambeau for the spots behind the
leader. At the finish, Borchardt crossed the line first to score the
win followed by Hotlz and Graczkowski while Thomas and Giers rounded
out the top five.
In earlier action, Bobby Giers took top honors in the Midwest
Sportsman fast dash while Kenny Joosten turned in the fastest lap in
qualifying at 12.721 seconds.
Aaron Cain took the lead on lap eight and went on to win the 18-lap
Thunderstock feature over Al Stippich and Joel Steffen who lead the
event briefly for five laps. Jim Bentzler finished in fourth place
while Bernie Leonard crossed the stripe in fifth place after pacing
the event for the first three laps. Matt Klenz won the 18-lap
Slinger Bees feature over Brandon Schwai and Tom Berens. Brandon
Tackes and Ken Schraufnagel finished in fourth and fifth place
respectively.
Jeff Looker battled hard with Dan Vixmer in the 20-lap Wisconsin
Sport Truck feature before holding Vixmer off at the finish for the
win. Kyle Quella was third followed by Sam Haven and Josh Jeske in
fourth and fifth place respectively. Earlier, Looker also scored the
win over Vixmer in the heat race while Vixmer was the fastest
qualifier at 13.463 seconds.
Wally Olezewski was the winner of the Speedway Guest Car event while
C.J. Corallini bested the field in the Spectator Eliminator
competition. Shane Becker closed the racing action with an exciting
win in the Figure 8 event after leader Scott Goetzke nearly collided
with another car in the “X” on the final lap, allowing Becker to
charge by for the win.
