“David Prunty Beats All But The Weather At Slinger Speedway"
By John Wiedemann
|
(Slinger,
WI); May 25, 2008 - David
Prunty was able to outrun the competition in the E.H. Wolf and Son's
Memorial Day 80 lap Late Model feature at Slinger Speedway on Sunday
night.
Unfortunately, outrunning the weather was not in the cards. The Late
Model feature race was shortened to
64 laps when rain hit the track, halting the action for the evening.
Photo Highlights |
David Prunty (#1) was out front of the pack when rains began
to fall in the E.H. Wolf and Sons Memorial 80. With the
race declared complete, Prunty, the defending track champion
was awarded the victory.
Conrad Morgan (#92) set the pace early in the Super Late Model
feature contest, until David Prunty (#1) used the high line to
take the top spot.
Lowell Bennett (#2) put on a late race change, doing battle
with Dale Prunty (#17) for this place, before the rain began
to fall.
Traffic got a little tight in Super Late Model feature action,
as this multi-car tangle slowed the pace of the feature
contest.
Dennis
Prunty (#42) topped the Super Late Model-semi-feature, and
advanced into the main event.
Former multi-time track champion Brad Mueller (#89) collected
fast qualifying honors in the Super Late Models.
Chris Blawat (#26) earned his first Limited Late Model feature
win of the 2008 season leading the race from green to
checkered.
Steve Apel (#16) topped the Limited Late Model dash event.
Defending Limited Late Model champion Jon Reynolds Jr., earned
the fastest qualifying lap in the division.
Dave Thomas set fast time in the Midwest Sportsman class, but
their feature race fell to rain this evening.
Steve Schulz takes his turn in victory lane after winning the
Midwest Modified feature race.
Ron Schmitt (#6) was victorious in the Midwest Modified dash.
Al Stippich (#66) earned top honors in the Thunderstock main
event.
Coming all the way from Indiana, Stephen Wells (#15) got his
first taste of the high-banked Slinger Super Speedway, and
it's victory lane, after topping the Slinger Bee main event. |
Conrad Morgan led the field to the green for the Late Model feature,
scheduled to run eighty laps. Early in the race, the Prunty brothers
started to make their presence known. As the green flag flew after
the
first caution on the ninth lap, David would restart in second with
Dale in fourth and Dennis in fifth. Immediately, David drove outside
of Morgan and took over the lead of the race. Five laps later, in a
battle for the second spot, contact between Mike Strupp and Morgan
caused a multi-car wreck that caught up almost half of the field
including front runners Morgan and Dennis Prunty.
As the race got back under way, Dale and David Prunty ran side by
side at the front of the pack for the next
five laps. David was able to stick his nose across the line to take
the lead but was unable to clear his brother. A lap later, David
grabbed the top spot back. David then started to stretch out the
lead leaving Dale to battle with Lowell Bennett.
Another caution flag flew after contact between Nick Schumacher and
Al Schill. Bennett took over the second position on the restart as
Dale Prunty started to fall backwards with Strupp and Tommy Pecaro
passing by on the inside groove.
As David Prunty reached lapped traffic, inclement weather had
reached the speedway and with 64 laps run,
the caution and checkered flags flew giving David the win.
Talking about the his chances on holding off Bennett if the race
would have gone the distance, Prunty
stated, "It would have been tough to hold him off on the straight,
but I had him in the turns."
Rich Loch led the first seventeen laps of the Late Model semi
feature. But it would be Jeff Way taking the lead from Loch and
holding on to the position for the final eight laps of the race to
take the win. Both Way and Loch transferred to the feature race.
Chris Blawat took advantage of his pole position starting spot to
hold on to the lead at the start of the Limited Late Model feature.
While the rest of the field battled behind him, Blawat kept his ride
on the bottom of the track. On the restart after a caution on the
tenth lap, Steve Apel took over the second position from Jerry
Eckhardt and Bob Braun started making his move after falling back
early. With two laps left Braun worked his way inside of Apel,
taking over the second position as the white flag waved. Laps ran
out for Braun as Blawat to the checkers for a flag to flag win.
The late model semi feature victory and pass to the feature went to
Trevor Dassow. Dassow grabbed the top
spot just after the halfway point and held off Tim Elfert to the
checkers.
Starting in the back of the pack for the Thunder Stock was not a
problem for Al Stippich. Stippich moved into 9th after a caution on
the first lap of the race. When the race restarted, Stippich used
just five more laps to work his way into the lead. Aaron Kane
followed into second with six laps left in the contest but could not
challenge as Stippich built up a straight away lead on his way to
the win.
Remarking on his drive from the back to the front, Stippich said, "I
got a few marks on my car, but we made it."
Top qualifier, Steven Wells, came up from Indiana to challenge the
rest of the Slinger Bees. Starting in the eleventh position of the
feature race, Wells worked his way a couple caution periods,
including a red flag, to assume the lead with four laps in the
books. After that, Wells ran away from the field to take home the
victory.
