Bamke Finds
Victory In Duquaine Concrete and Masonry 60!
By Dan Margetta
|
(Slinger, WI); July 6, 2008 - After
spending the last two weeks watching the feature finish from second
place, Collin Bamke put it all together Sunday night at the Slinger
Super Speedway by holding off Jamie Wallace to capture the victory
in the DuQuaine Concrete & Masonry 60-lap late model main event.
“I was beginning to think I was always going to be a bridesmaid
here,” Bamke stated afterwards referring to his recent streak of
runner-up results. “This is incredible,” Bamke continued. “Jamie
(Wallace) was consistent and I was starting to get worried, but then
he started getting a little bit loose, and I was able to get by.”
Mike Meyerhofer and Wallace led the field to the green flag and
Wallace quickly moved out front from the outside lane on lap three
while Bamke slid into the third slot just ahead of Tommy Hromadka
and Nick Schumacher. By lap 13, Bamke worked his way around
Meyerhofer for second while Schumacher advanced to fourth as Dennis
Prunty entered the top five. By lap 30, Wallace and Bamke began to
pull away from the field as Schumacher and Prunty raced into third
and fourth place respectively while Al Schill and David Prunty
marched into fifth and sixth. Three laps later, Dennis Prunty was
able to edge to the inside of Schumacher to take the third spot,
bringing Schill with him into fourth as Schumacher fell into a
battle with David Prunty for fifth. The leaders began to weave their
way through lapped traffic by lap 37 as David Prunty battled his way
into fourth place, behind Wallace, Bamke, and Dennis Prunty. Bamke
kept Wallace in his sights all the while the leaders were in the
traffic and on lap 41 he made his move, using the inside lane to
charge into the lead. Once out front, Bamke started to move away
from Wallace as the Prunty brothers began to dispute the third
position with Schill close behind. David Prunty took the third slot
on lap 46 as Schill challenged Dennis Prunty over fourth. Schill
used the outside groove to get around Dennis Prunty in a hard fought
effort for the spot while Bamke continued to show the way out front.
Bamke was never headed over the final laps and he charged under the
checkered flag for his first feature victory of the season while
Wallace wrapped up a strong run in second place. David Prunty
finished third while Schill and Dennis Prunty rounded out the top
five. Brad Mueller held off Dale Prunty at the finish for the sixth
spot as Schumacher, Meyerhofer, and Lowell Bennett completed the top
ten.
Dan Jung took top honors in the 30-lap late model semi-feature to
transfer into the main event along with second place finisher Randy
Schuler. Mike Egan finished third with Scott Schoeni fourth and Race
McComb fifth. Dennis Prunty won the late model fast dash while Brad
Mueller was the fastest qualifier at 11.496 seconds.
Wes Biswell made his season debut in his limited late model and his
effort paid off with an exciting win over Jon Reynolds Jr. in the
35-lap limited late model feature.
Biswell and Brad Keith staged a torrid battle for the top spot in
the opening laps with the lead changing hands nearly every lap as
Chris Ratajczyk and Jimmy Dragich raced in the tire tracks of the
lead duo. Keith was finally able to take command by lap ten with
Biswell remaining strong on the outside and Ratajczyk looking for a
way by on the inside. Keith had to fend off challenges from all
sides to maintain the lead as the first caution flag waved on lap 13
when Jack Raby spun and backed into the wall in turn three. During
the caution period, Keith was judged to have committed a lane
violation during the racing before the yellow flag and was sent to
the rear of the field. Biswell took the inside line for the restart,
leaving Ratajczyk the outside groove and as racing resumed, Biswell
jumped in front while contact between third place Dragich and
Ratajczyk, sent Ratajczyk spinning around in turn four to bring out
the yellow flag again. With Dragich and Rataczyk forced to start at
the rear of the field for the restart, Jon Reynolds Jr. moved into
second and took his turn challenging Biswell for the lead. A final
caution flag on lap 27 for a minor spin in turn one, set up a three
lap dash for the checkered flag. Reynolds looked high and low for a
way around Biswell in the final laps and despite a slight bobble by
Biswell on the white flag lap, was unable to find his way around as
Biswell took the victory. Steve Apel finished a strong third while
Jerry Eckhardt and Rob Braun were fourth and fifth respectively.
Chris Ratajczyk was the winner of the limited late model fast dash
and Becca Kasten blistered the speedway in 12.358 seconds as the
fastest qualifier in the division.
Mike Graczkowski held off Kenny Joosten to win the 30-lap Midwest
Sportsman feature.
Tim Fulford and John Janssen started from the front row and Fulford
jumped to the point to lead the first seven laps while Graczkowski
used the inside groove to take second place from Janssen. Fulford’s
car washed up the track on the exit of the corners and Graczkowski
was able to take the lead on lap eight while Kenny Joosten and Dave
Thomas began to march forward. Joosten moved into second place on
lap 12, taking Thomas with him in the process and into third while
Graczkowski continued to lead. Graczkowski began to encounter lapped
traffic which allowed Joosten and Thomas to close in by lap 22. Jeff
Holtz took over the fourth position and as the laps wound down, the
top four cars raced nose to tail on the speedway. Graczkowski’s car
performed well off the corners in the closing laps as Joosten was
unable to gain ground and at the checkered flag, Graczkowski took
the win over Joosten and Thomas. Holtz finished fourth while Jay
Shambeau crossed the stripe in fifth. Graczkowski also scored the
victory in the Midwest Sportsman fast dash and Joosten was the
fastest qualifier at 12.744 seconds.
Steve Schulz raced to the win in the 30-lap Midwest Modified main
event, holding off Matt Pate at the finish.
Steve Huelsbeck led the opening five laps over Bill Tandetzke,
Schulz, and Joey Bentfield. The racing amongst the leaders was
intense and it resulted in Tandetzke’s car looping around in turn
one on lap three to produce the first caution flag of the event.
Huelsbeck chose the inside line for the restart and as racing
resumed, Schulz used the outside groove to take command of the event
on lap six. A lap later, Schulz’s car got extremely loose off turn
two as Huelsbeck closed in to challenge. Schulz maintained the lead
while Huelsbeck settled into second as behind the lead duo, Joey
Bentfield, Joel Houpt, Matt Pate, Russ Moberly, and Ron Schmitt all
fought for position. Huelsbeck’s machine swapped ends in turn four
on lap nine and as it slid down the racetrack, it was struck hard in
the front by Bentfield as the caution flag flew again. Schulz led
over Houpt and Moberly on the restart and the yellow quickly flew
again when Moberly lost a drive shaft on the backstretch. Following
another caution flag on lap 13 for a spin by John Henning, Schulz
was unchallenged out front as Pate and Houpt battled for second.
Schulz drove to the win while Pate held off Houpt for second while
Tandetzke rebounded from his earlier spin to finish fourth. Ron
Schmitt finished fifth. Joey Bentfield was the winner of the Midwest
Modified fast dash and Schulz set fast time at 12.445 seconds.
Al Stippich took command of the 18-lap Thunderstock feature from Jim
Bentzler on lap 13 and took the victory over Aaron Cain. Bentzler
took the checkered flag in third place while Bernie Leonard finished
fourth. John Daley was fifth. Jason Hennes won the 18-lap Slinger
Bees event over Derek Hoerig and Austin Luedtke. Mike Lang and Ken
Schraufnagel rounded out the top five finishers. Channing Deering
was the winner of the Speedway Guest Car race and Brian Davis drove
his Subaru Impreza to the win in the Spectator Eliminator events.
The evening came to a close with Justin Poenitsch’s first career
Figure 8 victory in the 10-lap event.
