It's Morgan Again at the Slinger Super Speedway!
By Daryl Schultz

July 11, 1999; Slinger, WI -  Defending late model track champion, Conrad Morgan (Waukesha) continued his dominance of the Slinger Speedway as he claimed Round 2 of the Mobil and Coca Cola Triple Crown Classic Sunday night, July 11th. Morgan would lead Cindy Peterson (Butler), Rich Loch (Muskego), Lowell Bennett (Neenah) and David Prunty (Lomira) to the line in the top five of the 60 lap feature. Morgan got underneath the Peterson car on lap 49 and raced side by side with Wisconsin’s only female late model driver until completing the pass 3 laps later. He then pulled to a six car length win, his third in a row, and 7th of the season.

Peterson lead 41 laps as she moved up from her fourth row starting spot to take the lead on lap 11. Peterson claimed the additional $100.00, by leading lap 30, for the Mac Tools Half-Way Challenge. Morgan’s son, Donavan, would lead from the drop of the green until Peterson made her way around him.

In the post race interview, Morgan relayed that he seems to be in a zone and everything is working so well that the car can go anywhere he aims it. Competitors and fans would have to agree that Morgan has the car to beat and is well on his way to three-peating as track champion and earning his sixth overall late model title.

Wayne Freimund (West Allis) won his first checkered flag in the late model division during the semi feature race. Freimund worked the outside groove to pass veteran driver Al Schill (Franklin) on lap 16 of the 30 lap event. Schill gained the lead after early race leader Mike Egan (Slinger) encountered problems and had to pull off the track on lap 13. Schill would hold on to the second position and the final of the two transfer spots into the feature event. Following Freimund and Schill across the checkered was Dan Mills (Menomonee Falls), Danny Heying (Waukesha), and Rick Ottman (Milwaukee).

In other late model action, Scott Appelin (Milwaukee) won the 15 lap consi race and Eric Fransen (Franklin) won the five car shootout for the Mac Tools Trophy Dash. Morgan also set fast time with a lap of 11.715 seconds on “The World’s Fastest 1/4 Mile Oval”.

Veteran late model and modified division driver, Al Schill (Franklin) took home the checkered in the Midwest Modified feature as he again pulled double duty for the night. Rounding out the top five were Dennis Prunty (Allenton), Florian Wisinski (Greenfield), Brian Holtz (Franklin), and Larry Reihbrandt (Wauwatosa) in the 25 lap modified main.

Schill would take the lead on lap five after starting outside the third row. Once at the point, Schill was too strong for the rest of the pack as he survived the crash filled event. The race was slowed by three cautions, the third of which occurred with five laps remaining when the second place car of Eldon Zacek spun in turn 4. The first two cautions were also rough on the front runners. Caution one took out the second and third place runners John Kruschel (Sussex) and Larry Epright (East Troy) on lap seven and caution two took out the second place runner Lenny Gallenberg III (Kewaskum)when he was in the wrong place at the wrong time on lap eight.

Schill also won the 8 lap Eldorado Trailer Sales Trophy Dash and Wisinski was fast qualifier with a lap of 12.451 seconds.

Mark Bitzan (Menomonee Falls) took advantage of his starting position outside the front row to win the 16 lap Slinger Stinger feature race. Bitzan was followed across the line by Roger Schmid (Stone Bank), John Henning (Cedarburg), Mike Pascavis (Sheboygan), and current points leader Peter Wiedmeyer (West Bend). The race for second, third and fourth was nose to tail and side to side over the final 4 laps as the threesome came to the finish line. The victory would move Bitzan up two positions into third in the overall points race.

David Beck (Butler) won the 10 lap Slinger Stinger semi feature, Dave Lawrence (Madison) and Dan Miller (Sussex) each won their Stinger heat races and Scott Ascher (Sussex) was fast qualifier with a lap of 13.545 seconds.

Chris Price won his second Figure 8 feature of the season as eight cars battled for ten laps during the nightcap.

Mark and Ken Fogel bested the field to win the 10 lap Team Cruiser division feature, Jim Menard won the Speedway Guest cars, and Bob Sampson (Milwaukee) won the Spectator Elimination races.
