Morgan Claims Memorial Day Weekend 80!
By Daryl Schultz

May 25, 1998; Slinger, WI -  Conrad Morgan (Wales) scored his first regular season feature victory during the E.H. Wolf and Amoco Retailers Memorial Day Weekend 80 at the Slinger Super Speedway. The event which had to be run one day late on Memorial Day, would be made into a 6 lap shootout for the win as the third and final caution came out on lap 74 and moved the top five cars nose to tail. Morgan would get a clean jump on the green to hold off Lowell Bennett (Neenah) on his way to the win.

No one in the top five was able to move up after the restart with Bennett in second, Brad Mueller (Random Lake) recording his highest finish of the season in third, Jamie Wallace (Pell Lake) fourth and John Zimmerman (Markesan) fifth. The final caution flew as the rear end broke in Al Schill’s (Franklin) car in the third and fourth turns, as he was waging war for the fifth spot with Zimmerman. The two had battled side by side for over 10 laps when Schill encountered his misfortune.

The battle for the lead saw Morgan make the winning pass on lap 59 as he moved underneath Bennett. Bennett would fight back and challenge for the lead but could not get around the defending track champion, as he would have his hands full holding off Mueller to claim second. Bennett would lead the most laps as he made his way around 25 year Slinger veteran, Tony Strupp (West Bend), on lap 17 and claimed the MAC Tools Half-Way Challenge. Strupp, who started on the pole, would encounter problems shortly after giving up the lead and retired for the evening.

Bill Skinner Jr. (Pell Lake) started outside the front row enroute to victory in the 30 lap late model semi feature. Joel Laufer (Hartford) was the car on the move as he looked outside Chris Ratajczyk (Menomonee Falls) on lap 22 to battle for the final transfer spot. Laufer completed the pass the next lap and finished in the second position. Rounding out the top five were Ratajczyk, Steve Huelsbeck (Milwaukee), and Mike McCabe (Muskego). Russ Peterson (Hartland) finished in the top spot of the 20 lap late model consi race. In other late model action, Mueller turned fast time with a lap of 11.686 seconds and Strupp took the checkered in the Bumper to Bumper Trophy Dash.

Fran Prestay (Twin Lakes) took home top honors and a big bonus as he claimed the Eldorado Trailer Sales Clean Sweep Award in the Midwest Modified Division. Prestay earned an additional $1,050.00 as he moved up from his ninth starting spot in the 30 lap feature to win, passed 7 competitors in the 8 lap Eldorado Trailer Sales Trophy Dash to win and set fast time for the division with a 12.363 second lap. The top five was rounded out by game Florian Wisinski (Greenfield) who stayed on Prestay’s tail after showing him to the front for second place, Jeff Holmgren Jr. (East Troy), early race leader Alan Keppert (West Bend) and Larry Reihbrandt (Wauwatosa).

The 18 lap Slinger Stinger Street Stock Feature was won by Bill Shavlik (West Bend) as he had all he could do to hold off runner-up Roger Schmid (Oconomowoc) to take the checkered flag. Coming home third was Dan Miller (Sussex), fourth, Paul Wagner (West Bend) and Jim Spring (Grafton) rounded out the top five. Schmid and John Doke (Slinger) each won their respective Slinger Stinger heat race, and Todd Brauneis (West Allis)clocked in fastest with a 13.629 second lap during qualifying.

Steve Schuldt (Sussex) survived the wild and wacky 9 lap Figure 8 Feature as he dodged and swerved his way to victory over Dave Haferkorn (Sussex), who came up short in his bid for three wins in a row.

In other racing action, Rob Myers and Duane Olbinski won the Team Cruiser feature, Jeremy Sandretti took the checkered for the Speedway Guest Cars and Torre Zweifel (West Bend) took home the checkered in the Spectator Elimination Races.
