Morgan Repeats Championship!
Prestay Claims Midwest Modified Championship!

By Daryl Schultz

September 6, 1998; Slinger, WI -  Lowell Bennett (Neenah) motored to his fourth feature win of the season as he won the Labor Day Weekend Season Championship race at the Slinger Super Speedway. With Bennett working lap traffic, Brad Mueller (Random Lake) and Conrad Morgan (Wales) waged a wild battle for the runner up spot. The two were cutting into the lead that Bennett had worked to as they ran side by side over the last 15 circuits of the 98 lap Holiday Weekend Special. Mueller would edge ahead at the line to claim second, with Morgan third, Eric Fransen (Franklin) fourth and Mike Strupp (Theresa) fifth.

Bennett spent much of the event holding off a strong run by Strupp until Mueller and Morgan made their way around the second generation driver on lap 82. Bennett was enjoying a half straight-a-way lead when the pair started their assault on the top spot after moving into second and third. They would cut the lead to 6 car lengths at the drop of the checkered as Mueller worked the high groove with Morgan underneath. Strupp had given Bennett a mirror full of his ride until the last of 3 cautions flew on lap 69. Going back to green, Strupp started fighting his ride as Bennett worked to what he thought was a comfortable margin.

Bennett could not shake Strupp after the first two cautions on laps 36 and 65, which brought Bennett back to the field. Prior to the cautions Bennett, who started outside row 4, enjoyed over a full straight-a-way lead after taking the lead on lap 5. Bennett also claimed the $150.00 for the Mac Tools Half-Way Challenge by leading lap 49.

Morgan successfully defended his late model track champion on the strength of his third place finish, his fifth overall title at the high banked oval, by amassing 1107 points for the year. Mueller (1039) edged out Bennett (1024) for second in the overall standings with the top five rounded out by Tony Strupp (West Bend) (941) and David Prunty (Lomira) (817).

Mike Egan (Slinger) took the checkered in the 30 lap late model semi feature. He moved into the lead on lap three getting by pole sitter Brady Bennett (Winchester). Working lap 13 Donavan Morgan (Oconomowoc) also got under Bennett to take the runner-up position but would never catch Egan and contend for the lead. Rounding out the top five behind Egan and Morgan, who gained the two transfer positions, were Burton Brown (Neenah), Bennett, and Charlie Thon Jr. (Milwaukee). The five car group had broken away from the rest of the field working lap 17, until Jeff Kendall (Montello) ran them down on lap 23. Kendall broke into the mix working lap 27 when Thon got out of shape in turn two and Kendall made the pass on the outside for fifth place. Thon was able to battle back in the final circuits and regain the fifth position.

In other late model action, Dave Teske (Menomonee Falls) won the 20 lap consi and transfer into the semi. Eric Fransen (Franklin) turned fast time with a lap of 11.688 seconds (77.002 mph) and Jeff Holtz (Franklin) won the 8 lap Bumper to Bumper Trophy Dash on the World’s Fastest 1/4 Mile Oval.

Mike Bidlack (Elkhorn) made it a clean sweep in the Midwest Modified Division. Bidlack grabbed the lead on lap two of the main and would pace the field the rest of the way in the 35 lap feature. Florian Wisinski (Greenfield) and Fran Prestay (Twin Lakes) made a late attempt on the eventual winner, but ran out of time after moving up from their respective fifth and sixth row starting positions. Rounding out the top five were Larry Reihbrandt (Wauwatosa) and Dennis Prunty (Allenton).

Bidlack also claimed the 8 lap Eldorado Trailer Sales Midwest Modified Trophy Dash and Prestay was fast qualifier for the evening with a lap of 12.346 seconds.

Prestay earned the division title for the Midwest Modifieds with a total of 1634 points. Following Prestay in the top five was Wisinski (1543), Reihbrandt (1327), Brian Holtz (Franklin) (1317) and Prunty (1279).

Dave Berndt (West Bend) won his fourth Slinger Stinger feature of the season Sunday night. The race ended with Berndt edging ahead of race leader, Mike Pascavis (Sheboygan) as the two drove to the checkered flag. Berndt caught Pascavis with just three laps remaining and would lead the one lap that mattered the most. Pascavis lead the first 19 laps, from his second starting position, in the 20 lap feature.

Berndt also claimed the Slinger Stinger Street Stock Championship with 918 points for the season. Berndt actually finished second in the overall point standings, but the top point driver did not meet minimum requirements, allowing Berndt to claim the title. He was followed in the top five by Bill Shavlik (West Bend) (741), Dale Prunty (Allenton) (725), Roger Schmid (Oconomowoc) (703) and Peter Wiedmeyer (West Bend) (675).

Wiedmeyer set fast time with a lap of 13.590 seconds and Paul Wagner (West Bend) and John Wandrey (Allenton) each won their respective heat races.

The 12 lap Figure 8 Feature was won by first time driver at the track, Randy Thiemer (Kaukauna). The division championship was won by Mark Ritger (St. Cloud) who passed Steve Schuldt (Sussex) in the points race during the last night of point competition. Schuldt entered the evening with a 20 point lead but experienced trouble on the first lap and was unable to continue in the race. Ritger tallied 1195 points to claim the crown with Schuldt in second (1170), Shane Becker (Iron Ridge) third (985), Chris Price fourth (980) and Grant Greenwald (Sussex) rounding out the top five (880).

In other racing action, Rob Meyers and Duane Olbinski won their third Team Cruiser race in a row, Kevin Weyre (Kewaskum) won the Spectator Elimination race, and Terry Schaarschmidt won the Speedway Guest cars.
