Strupp
Earns Victory! August 2, 1998; Slinger, WI - Tony Strupp (West Bend) notched feature victory number 5 for the 1998 season during the Old Wisconsin Sausage 60 Sunday night, August 2nd at the Slinger Super Speedway. Strupp would lead the final 22 laps as he would hold off repeated challenges by Brad Mueller (Random Lake) on his way to victory. Strupp would take the lead from polesitter Cindy Peterson (Butler) working lap 38 and Peterson would be the cause of the fourth and final caution one lap later. Peterson would be relegated to the rear of the field as a result. Strupp and Mueller would battle for the remainder of the 60 lap feature and would be joined late in the race by Conrad Morgan (Wales). Mueller could not make it around the 25 year track veteran as he was busy holding onto his second finishing spot. Morgan would claim third, with Al Schill (Franklin) and Eric Fransen (Franklin) rounding out the top five. Strupp, who started outside row 5, wasted no time working his way into the top five just five laps into the event. He would make his way around second place Mueller 10 laps later and pulled up to battle Peterson for the lead. Strupp motored around for the point while working the thirty-eighth circuit. Peterson spun between turn three and four the next lap bringing out the caution, allowing the field to bunch back up. Strupp and Mueller would get a jump on Morgan on the restart as the top three slowly pulled away from the pack. Morgan moved up to the rear of Mueller just seven laps from the end, but could not improve his standing. The driver making the biggest gain on the night was Schill. After starting in the 18th position, Schill picked off car after car working his way around Fransen and into fourth spot on lap 43. He could not catch the top trio before the checkered flag fell. Burton Brown (Neenah) led the way in the late model semi feature. Donavan Morgan (Oconomowoc) was able to keep Brown in his sights but didnt have what he needed to challenge for the lead. Rick Ottman (Milwaukee) made a charge under Morgan in the final lap trying to gain the final transfer position into the feature event. Morgan would hold on to second by a half a car length ahead of Ottman across the line. Rounding out the top five was Rich Loch (Muskego) in fourth and Mark Schroeder (Green Bay) in fifth. Ron Malec (Wadsworth) took the checkered in the 20 lap consi race allowing him to move into the semi feature. David Prunty (Lomira) was fast qualifier with a lap of 11.667 seconds and Morgan won the 8 lap Bumper to Bumper Trophy Dash. Larry Reihbrandt (Wauwatosa) earned his first Midwest Modified feature win of the season Sunday night. Reihbrandt led the 30 lap event from start to finish but had to hold off strong challenges throughout. Florian Wisinski (Greenfield) would get up on the back bumper of leader Reihbrandt on numerous occasions, looking to pass for the lead on the outside, but would have to fall back in line each time. Division points leader Fran Prestay (Twin Lakes) worked his way from his tenth starting position to put himself in contention during the final circuits of the race. With two laps remaining, the top two cars of Reihbrandt and Wisinski encountered lap traffic. Prestay, who was in third, was able to take advantage of the situation edging ahead of Wisinski as the two crossed the line. Rounding out the top five was Wisinski, Dennis Prunty (Allenton), and Alan Keppert (West Bend). Prunty won the Eldorado Trailer Sales Trophy Dash and Wisinski set fast time for the Midwest Modified division by turning a lap of 12.400 seconds. Slinger Stinger points leader Paul Wagner (West Bend) won his third feature event of the 98 season. Wagner would lead the entire race and be followed across the line by Dale Prunty (Allenton), Mike Pascavis (Sheboygan), John Wandrey (Allenton), and Dave Berndt (West Bend) in the top five. The 18 lap event, normally full of action, seen the top five earn their positions uncontested for most of the event. Fast qualifier for the Slinger Stingers was Berndt who turned a lap of 13.444 seconds. Wagner and Roger Schmid (Oconomowoc) won their respective heat races. Chris Price would hold on for the win in the 10 lap Figure 8 feature as Price and Dan Gracyalny (Little Chute) finished side-by-side at the line. Dan and Mark Jung won the Team Cruiser division.
