Wisinski Takes Midwest Modified Feature!

By Daryl Schultz

July 26, 1998; Slinger, WI -  Conrad Morgan (Wales) claimed the checkered flag of the Eye Deal Optical 60 Sunday night, July 26th, at the Slinger Super Speedway. Morgan would be shadowed the entire race by Cindy Peterson (Butler) after he immediately grabbed the lead from the outside of the first row. Morgan would lead Peterson, John Mueller (Hubertus), Brad Mueller (Random Lake) and Mike Strupp (Theresa) in the top five.

Peterson was never able to make a serious attempt for the point as Morgan pulled to a 7 car length win in the 60 lap main event for the late model division. Morgan, would catch the rear of the field on lap 38 and slowly increase his lead over Peterson as they began to put cars a lap down. Peterson got by pole sitter, John Mueller, working lap 15 just prior to the first of two caution flags for the race. The top five reached and maintained there respective positions just passed the half way mark of the event. Gaining the most positions for the night would be last week’s winner, Brad Mueller ending his night in fourth after starting in the 12th position.

The second of the cautions, which happened on lap 20, would collect division point leader Lowell Bennett (Neenah) and allow Morgan to pull to within 10 points of the lead as we head into the last two months of the season.

Todd Thelen (Oconomowoc) took the checkered in the late model semi feature to earn a transfer position to the feature event. Thelen left the battle behind him as Toby Rott (Slinger) and Tony Strupp (West Bend) fought for the second and last transfer position into the main. Strupp looked inside of Rott on the restart after the second and final caution of the race came out on lap 23 of the 30 lap event. Rott held his position over the final 7 circuits and would finish a half a car length ahead of Strupp as he made an all out effort coming to the checkered flag. Rounding out the top five was Chris Ratajczyk (Menomonee Falls) in fourth and Rick Ottman (Milwaukee) in fifth.

In other late model action, Matt Raudabaugh (Menomonee Falls) won the consi race and Lowell Bennett (Neenah) became the fast qualifier by being the first driver of the evening to turn a lap of 11.718 seconds. Joining Bennett with the quick lap was Mike Strupp. Mark Schroeder (Green Bay) won the 8 lap Bumper to Bumper Trophy Dash and Morgan would add an additional $150.00 from the Mac Tools Half-Way Challenge to his winnings for the night.

Florian Wisinski (Greenfield) used a late race caution to get by Brian Holtz (Franklin) after Holtz had showed the way for much of the 30 lap feature. Holtz did a masterful job of holding Wisinski behind him after he claimed the point on lap 11. Wisinski tried inside and outside without success until caution came on the track just two laps from the end. He would make the winning pass on the outside of Holtz after the two accepted the white flag. Watching the action in third spot was Dennis Prunty (Allentown), while Alan Keppert (West Bend) and John Kruschel (Butler) rounded out the top five.

Prunty won the 8 lap Eldorado Trailer Sales Midwest Modified Trophy Dash and Wisinski set fast time with a lap of 12.469 seconds.

Peter Wiedmeyer (West Bend) held on to win the 18 lap feature for the Slinger Stinger Street Stocks. Wiedmeyer traded the lead with eventual runner up finisher, Dave Berndt (West Bend) after the tandem moved into the top two spots on lap 11. Berndt took over the lead for just three laps working lap 14 before giving it back to Wiedmeyer. The two were side by side as they crossed the finish line, much to the crowds delight. Rounding out the top five were Dan Miller (Sussex), Scott Ascher (Sussex) and Dean Olla (Milwaukee).

Paul Wagner (West Bend) turned a lap of 13.290 seconds to earn fast time and Berndt and Bill Shavlik (West Bend) each won their respective heat race.

The 10 lap Figure 8 feature was won by Dan Gracyalny (Little Chute) who earned his second win of the season.

In other racing action, Dan and Mark Jung won their third Team Cruiser race in a row. P.J. Cain (Sussex) outlasted the competition in the Spectator Elimination Races and Randy Barker, of Chad Barkers racing team, earned the top spot in the Speedway Guest Car action.
